How Metal Braces Work
Traditional braces are the foundation of orthodontic treatment. We use brackets and wires to align the teeth and perfect the bite. Metal braces are a great option for kids, teens, and adults to treat nearly all types of bite issues.
Here’s how all the components work together to give you a beautiful, confident smile:
Brackets
Dr. Funk uses durable, stainless steel brackets that she’ll painlessly glue to each tooth before threading the archwire through each bracket.
Archwire
This thin piece of advanced metal wire will run through each of your brackets and apply gentle, continuous pressure. Dr. Funk will shape and curve the wire according to your unique treatment plan to ensure your teeth move in the correct position.
Elastic Ties, O-Rings, or Ligatures
To secure the archwire, Dr. Funk will stretch these tiny rubber rings or elastic bands around the hooks on your brackets.
Dr. Funk will replace these elastics at each adjustment appointment. They come in dozens of colors, so you can use these bands to match your braces to your personality, to show your support for an athletic team or school, or even to color-coordinate for a special occasion.
Rubber Bands
If necessary, Dr. Funk will attach these elastic bands between an upper bracket and lower bracket to correct your bite. The pressure from the elastic can correct an underbite by nudging your lower jaw backward or an overbite by nudging your upper jaw backward.
